Sandy;
You surprised me. Most Brits say “car hire”. Most U S car rental agency’s offer one way rentals, but they may charge you a surcharge for the service. You could either book there in the U K through a travel consolidator or on-line directly with U S rental agencies. By the way Hertz is one of the more expensive companies here. Try Dollar (www.dollar.com)or Thrifty (www.thrifty.com), they seem to be the most economical at the moment. Los Angeles to Las Vegas is roughly 430 Km, and about a 4-4 1/2 hour drive. Most American cars have automatic transmissions. As a tourist, your U K driver license is valid in both California and Nevada. Please watch your speed while driving on Interstate Highway 15, the fines are EXTREMELY expensive. The weather in Los Angeles in May is usually cloudy and overcast in the mornings clearing in the late afternoon and on the cool side. We call it the “May Grey’s”.Enjoy your stay while here in the States.
You are probably advised to book the rental from the UK so you have a car reserved for you, I’ve always done this with Hertz (I have a discount card). It won’t affect the price where you book it but by doing it before you go you are assured a motor when you get there. If you are doing a one way stay with the big boys (Avis, Hertz etc.) because they have a better infrastructure for one way rentals.
Other things to note, take your UK licence with you, don’t bother getting an International licence, US car hire companies aren’t interested. Always hire a 4-door NEVER a 2-door.
